LIVESTOCK SLAUGHTERED: Trend CATTLE (EXCLUDING CALVES) The trend estimate for the number of cattle slaughtered in June quarter 2003 fell by 2% to 2.0 million. The continued effects of dry conditions were identified as holding back available supplies. CALVES The trend estimate for the number of calves slaughtered in June quarter 2003 fell by 1% to 307,000. SHEEP AND LAMBS In June quarter 2003, the trend estimate for the number of sheep slaughtered fell by 18% to 2.6 million. Flock rebuilding saw slaughter numbers at their lowest level since December quarter 1984. The trend estimate for the number of lambs slaughtered was steady at 4.3 million. PIGS The trend estimate for the number of pigs slaughtered in June quarter 2003 increased for the tenth consecutive quarter to a record 1.5 million. Continued pressure from feed costs saw slaughter numbers remain at high levels. MEAT PRODUCTION: Trend BEEF The trend estimate for beef production fell by 3% to 488,000 tonnes in June quarter 2003. Average slaughter weights have declined over the past year due to drought and the increasing numbers of female cattle slaughtered. MUTTON AND LAMB The trend estimate for mutton production fell by 18% to 51,600 tonnes in June quarter 2003, as sheep slaughterings reached their lowest level in 18 years. The trend estimate for lamb production rose by 2% to 85,500 tonnes. TOTAL RED MEAT The trend estimate for total red meat production fell by 3% to 742,000 tonnes in June quarter 2003, due to falls in beef and mutton production. CHICKEN MEAT The trend estimate for chicken meat production in June quarter 2003 fell by 2% to 167,000 tonnes. High feed grain costs continued to impact on production levels. LIVESTOCK PRODUCTS: Trend WHOLE MILK INTAKE BY FACTORIES The trend estimate for whole milk intake by factories fell by 6% to 2.4 billion litres in March quarter 2003, as drought conditions continued to reduce milk production levels. BROKERS AND DEALERS RECEIVALS OF TAXABLE WOOL The trend estimate for wool receivals by brokers and dealers fell by 10% in June quarter 2003, to 107,000 tonnes. Although wool prices have recovered a little since last year, the downward trend in wool production has continued. LIVESTOCK EXPORTS: Original EXPORTS OF LIVE SHEEP Live sheep exports fell by 41% to 965,000 in June quarter 2003, due mainly to reduced demand from Middle Eastern markets and tight local supplies. Gross value of live sheep exports fell to $68.5 million. Unit value increased slightly to $71.06. EXPORTS OF LIVE CATTLE Increased demand from Asian markets saw live cattle exports increase in June quarter 2003, up by 27% to 210,000. Gross value of live cattle exports increased by 17% to $117 million. Unit value fell by 8% to $557.26. Document Selection These documents will be presented in a new window.
